ANSWER TO AUTUMN'S PRAYERS!

We've been trying to work more with the youth recently here in Yucaipa, and that has been interesting. One of the things that we've been doing is going to Early Morning Seminary. Basically, the High School aged youth can attend this early morning class that covers the Book of Mormon, The New Testament, the Old Testament, and then the Doctrine and Covenants (which contains many revelations received by Joseph Smith from God), one for each year. It's really cool, and my seminary experiences are something that I've drawn upon a number of times throughout my mission

It's been absolutely fantastic for getting to know the youth of the church, but it is absolutely awful waking up at 5:15am to be ready for that! And I was thinking that 6:30am was early!

Also, these kids are so funny! The class was studying about the Godhead (the Doctrine that God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost are three separate beings, but are One in purpose), and split up into partnerships to role play teaching this old man named Ben, who didn't understand the principle. So, firstly, almost every group shared the same scripture, but then they just start Roasting this poor old man Ben! He just had a question, and all of these kids just kept telling this imaginary man how wrong he was! It was so funny, Elder Equatore and I couldn't stop smiling in the back. They'll get it someday!

By the way, I'm writing this on Tuesday because on my normal P-day, which is Monday, some help was needed at the Temple, and we volunteered to help out, with the promise that we could make up for lost time on Tuesday. I love being in the Temple, because it is such a special place where we can put normal stress away and feel the Spirit! 

I think that one of the biggest miracles from the week would have to be last night. We were just walking through Walgreens, and one of our members, Sister Nichols, was there! We start talking with her,  and she asked if we had a dinner appointment that night.  We didn't,  so she invited us over for soup. Sweet,  right? 

It gets better.

We're getting ready to go,  and she tells us that she invited her friend,  Autumn, and Autumn's daughter, Macie, over for dinner as well! We were so excited! We had talked to Autumn a little bit before, and she seemed super interested in learning more about the gospel! But we hadn't really been able to get in contact with her for a while, so we couldn't wait to get over there! 

When we did, we had some super good pizza and soup! We finished eating, and then Autumn started talking what she knew about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. It turned out that she had been thinking about the Church a lot more than we thought. She had cornered one of Sister Nichol's sons one evening and told him to tell her more about the Book of Mormon. He, being a Return Missionary, was super excited and shared a lot with her! She kept saying, "With all of what I've learned about the Church so far, it just makes sense," or, "It just sounds right!" 

We shared the scripture Moroni 10:5, which says that "By the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." We told her that that was the Holy Ghost telling her that what she had learned was true, and then asked what her biggest Question at that moment was. She thought about it, and decided that it was whether or not she should keep meeting with us. We invited her to pray right then about it, and she accepted! 

We went to the living room and kneeled down, and Autumn gave the most Genuine, Heartfelt prayer I think I've ever heard. She asked her question, and the Spirit just filled the room! I know that God answered her question right then! We asked what she would do now that she had gotten an answer, and she, without our input, started listing off all of the things that she wanted to do, like reading the scriptures more, reading the introduction to the Book of Mormon, and so on! 

We are so excited for Autumn to meet with her assigned missionaries, because she has been searching for a long time for God's true church, and I know that she has found it! 

I know that this is the Lord's work! It is the work of bringing all of our Heavenly Father's children, that's all of us, home again! I know it, and I love the opportunity to be a part of it!

CACTUS, CHILI DOGS AND

CHERRY CHEESECAKE

Ok, where do I start this week? It was pretty nuts! That being said, it was more like the good kind of nuts. Like, lots of super good, Mind-Blowing Stuff!  Not the bad kind that makes your throat all itchy and swelly and makes your lip all swelly. That would be bad.

Speaking of weird things we're eating, someone we are teaching invited us over for her birthday dinner. There we had chili dogs, with Mayonnaise mixed in the chili. THE. BEST. CHILI DOGS. We also had some cheesecake with Cherry filling on top. And then, her mom gives us each a piece of cactus. Like, CACTUS. Like, they have cactus in their backyard,  and they just cut off a blade-thing and peeled off the spines, and we ate it with lemon juice and salt. So, we had Chili dogs, Cherry Cheesecake, and Cactus. Yep. 

There is this woman learned that she needed to move out of her house this weekend. She called the missionaries and ask for help. So our Friday and Saturday were mostly camp rise of service! We helped load and unload basically an entire house. But, some of her family aren't members of the church, and we got to get to know them a bit as we helped there! 

We also had an amazing Zone Conference with Elder Pearson! He is a member of the Quorum of the Seventy. (Remember in Luke 10:1, where Jesus gave Seventy others similar duties as the Twelve Apostles? Same thing with Elder Pearson.)

He instructed us on how we could be more effective missionaries. There are so many things we learned! I think that the biggest lesson that he drove home was that God loves us! He is our Heavenly Father, which means that, at the core of our Identity, we are His Sons and Daughters. With that pressed into our minds, we then understand that there is nothing that we cannot do when we align our lives with the will of our Heavenly Father. He will never abandon us. EVER! Everytime we ask sincerely in prayer with real intent if He loves us, then He will answer everytime. He will answer, usually, through His Holy Spirit. We can recognize that Spirit through the feelings of love and peace that are brought to our hearts. 

He encouraged us to go out and invite others to do this, and I wish to invite all of you! Even if you know, based on knowledge or past experiences, that your Heavenly Father loves you, please pray again. Pray and ask if He loves you, and the answer will come! 

After you receive that answer, you will be able to find comfort as you remember and reflect on that experience. You will be able to know that God is there, He hears your prayers, and that He loves you, His Child. I know this will happen for you if you will pray and ask!

I know Our Heavenly Father lives and loves us. The Entire Gospel of Jesus Christ is put into perspective as we understand that that principle.

P.P.S.S. So, this book came out recently, and it's called "Saints." It's about the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, starting with the Restoration of the church by the Prophet Joseph Smith. Well, I kind of binge read it, and it was delicious. I finished it, and it was really good! If you've ever been curious about the History of the Church, this novel is the best way I know to learn about it! It answered some of my questions, and it helped me to learn some new things as well! Here's a link! I highly recommend it!

SEPTEMBER 11, 2018 - WEEK #28

TRANSFERS .... UH OH ...

September 11, 2018

Transfers!!! Elder Ford left, which was super sad, but Elder Equatore just came in! Turns out, the two of them just switched places. From Northpark YSA to the Yucaipa 3rd Ward! It's been a bit of a change for him, going from teaching Young Single Adults to teaching families again, but he's still been super Awesome! 

Elder Equatore is from Montana, and he likes throwing Knives! He doesn't do it on the mission. He's super crazy, but also super creative, and an awesome missionary! His last name comes from Italy, and it's pronounced like the country Equador, but with a "t." 

Fun things that happened this week include: 

- Elder Ford wanted to say goodbye to our Elder's Quorum President, and so we go into his home and Elder Ford starts talking to him. His Daughter comes up to me with a little children's book (Baby Mickey lost his ball or something), and I'm all like, "Why not? I can serve her parents for a few minutes." We read through a couple short books, using silly voices, and it was a lot of fun! A couple days later, we go back to introduce Elder Equatore, and there she is again! "I remember you! You read this book with me!" So we went and reread the books while Elder Equatore met our Elders Quorum President. It was so fun!

- We went to visit Richee on Tuesday, and while we were waiting for him, another man named Mario started talking to us. He told us that he used to be a member of the Church when he lived in Glendale, which he told us had a large LDS Population. We invited him to come to church again sometime, and after we told him where our building was, he told us again that he used to be a member of the Church when he lived in Glendale, which is well known for it's large LDS population. We looked at each other, but kept talking. Later in the conversation, he informs us that he used to be a member of the church, but that was when he lived in Glendale. Glendale, you see, has a strong LDS Presence, or, at least, that's what we hear. He had asked for our phone number, and we gave it to him. Today, we get a phone call, and guess what! It was Mario! He asked who we were, and how our number got on his phone. We explained who we were, and he then said, "You said LDS? I used to be LDS! When I lived in Glendale!" He also said that he had no recollection of us talking with him, so we're pretty sure he's got an issue with his memory, but he's a really sweet nice and fun guy!

- We went to the house of a Member kind of on a whim. They had helped us in teaching a lesson before, and I thought it would be good to introduce Elder Equatore. We go over and knock on the door, and then this car pulls up into the driveway. The mom gets out of the car, and the daughter jumps out and runs to the back. We got talking to the mother, and she tells us that she has friends who are members of the church, and she wanted to learn more! She asked if we did Bible Studies or anything like that, and we were like, "Um, YES!" After we exchange numbers and everything, the member we were going to visit comes out of the house, along with her daughter and THE ENTIRE DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS GROUP, all heading out to go clean up the  church building!! They were super nice, and we're hoping to go and talk to some of those kids again soon!!

That was some of the craziness from this week. I've been trying my best to lead this area, and I can tell you that there has never been a greater measure of the Spirit leading our day and our activities. As we humble ourselves and pray for God to help us in our days, He will! I know it!

AUGUST 28 & SEPTEMBER 4, 2018 - WEEKS #26/27

UPDATES GALORE!

John! He got baptized on the 25th! Hooray!!! (Fanfare!)

The baptismal service was super awesome! We had a lot people from the ward there, our Zone Leaders came, and then our Mission President, President Dixon, was there, too! So no pressure, right?

But it went really smoothly! Our Ward Mission Leader took over the program planning, and it went really well! After John's baptism, he just shone a little bit brighter, and I didn't see his smile leave his face for the rest of the day! 

On Sunday, one of his friends in the Ward was able to be the voice in giving him the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and I got to stand in the circle for that. What an amazing experience! 

Something else that is incredible is that Manuel, who we learned prefers to be called Richee (He emphasizes the "ee" sound at the end, so then he will always make you smile!), was able to come to John's Baptism with his neighbor, who is a member in our ward! Ever since then, he's been talking nonstop about the feelings he got there. 

Fast forward to Sunday the 2nd, Richee comes to church with that same member, and is talking that whole way about things at the baptismal service. Our member said that Richee said something like, "I want that same thing at my baptism!"

Needless to say, we are going to invite him to be baptized in the near future.

A couple that we've been working with for a while, the Liggetts, have been making some good progress lately! We've also been shown a couple of cool things by them. Like a BB Gun modeled after a mafia gun (the Thompson), how to shove a nail in your head, and more Card tricks! And on top of it, we've gotten to understand their needs better.

We also met Janet, who is super cool! She had a medical trial she was going through, and then one day, it mostly went away. She Says, "It must've been God, right? Do you think I was healed by God?" We know she was!

We had the awesome oportunity to learn more about a topic I was not very familiar with. We learned about family history! I learned that there are 2 super cool websites to go to and each of them has a different purpose. They are rootsmapper.com and relativefinder.org. On the Relative Finder one, we are able to see all of the famous people we are related to! It is super fun! On Rootsmapper we are able to see where all of our ancestors are from according to the map! It was so cool to learn more! I'll send some pictures of some of the things we found!

And finally, Transfers are happening. I'm staying!! Elder Ford is going, though. He has been here 6 months, and so it's been a little crazy for him, but he'll do just fine in his new area. Meanwhile, I'm going to have a new companion that I've never met! Well, I talked to him once and saw him a couple times, but we were never formally introduced, so I'm excited! 

Shorter Email, but I'm hoping things will calm down after transfers. I know that God lives and loves us! He will send people to help us, and His Spirit is always available to give comfort and direction, if we will reach out and seek Him through Prayer and reading His Scriptures!

AUGUST 14 & 21, 2018 - WEEKS #24 & 25

So, things are a little crazy. We had gone to the Temple a couple weeks ago, and that threw off things. And between that and the fact that I write very slowly, we got a bit behind. The other thing that happened that is throwing things off is that I normally keep notes on my phone to keep track of what happened over the week (Because I'm still trying to get better at writing in my journal), but then this morning our devices started freaking out. A couple minutes later, most of the devices had all of their apps deleted. We're all in a little bit of confusion, but it will all work out! Elder Ford and I were able to get our schedule down before everything disappeared, but now we're without a map or our directory for a bit, so I'm thinking this will be a new adventure!

Something CRAZY that happened was that we were at an after baptism party for one of the kids in our ward, and I ran into Krystal! If that name doesn't sound familiar, don't worry! It still doesn't. But, it turns out that we live in China at the same time, and even went to the same Youth Conference! That was a little weird, especially since I don't recognize her but she recognized me, and because of the fact that I still don't know why she was there, but it was really cool! I also was able to reach out to another friend from China, and they responded, so they must still be alive. That was cool!

On Saturday, we got a notification for a media referral (Someone who had requested a free copy of the Bible or the Book of Mormon), and so we went to go deliver that, and met Manuel! Manuel is this sweet old man, and he was going to be sitting at home a lot for reasons, and decided to actually read the Bible, so he requested one online! We went over, and he asked if we believed in apostles. We smiled, and told him yes, and that God loves us so much that he has called Apostles and Prophets to lead and guide His Church today! We were able to go back last night and teach him a little bit more about the Restoration of the same Church Jesus Christ established! 

Also, John's Baptism is this Weekend! He will be baptized Saturday the 25th, and we are doing everything we can to make it happen! Neither Elder Ford or I have taken part in planning a baptism before, so we are planning and replanning and probably overplanning to make sure everything is in place for him! It sounds stressful, but we're actually super excited for him! 

John really loves Jesus Christ, and he loves things that remind him of Him. One of those things is a heavy Christian Rock band called Stryper. He LOVES this band! I think he's legitimately mentioned them everytime we've met him for a lesson, and keeps reminding us to look them up after our mission. So after a lesson, we wanted John to have some input on who would speak or what hymns we would sing at his Baptism, and so we ask him. 

"I want Honestly by Stryper to be played at my Baptism!" We had to explain that it was a sacred meeting, so we didn't want to play rock songs. But that was such a John answer! He is so much fun!

Another adventure with John, our Bishop had asked us to help John start his Family History work, and so Elder Ford and I, the least qualified Family History Consultants, sat down with little to no information and John. We clicked a lot of buttons, and then, through a miracle, we found John's Grandma! And from there, his family tree exploded! We got a ton of his family going all the way back to 1605! It was super cool!

Something I learned from my Personal Studies was in 1 Nephi 17:30. It says, "And notwithstanding they being led, the Lord their God, their Redeemer, going before them, leading them by day and giving light unto them by night, and doing all things for them which were expedient for man to receive, they hardened their hearts and blinded their minds, and reviled against Moses and against the true and living God."

I specifically honed in on that first part, that said that they were led by a cloud at day and were given light at night. I find it interesting that the Lord didn't expect the children of Israel to always be moving. Sometimes, it was night time, and the people needed to rest. But no matter what time it was or the circumstances of their travels, they always benefited from the presence of the Lord in their lives whether it be guidance while in hard times of trial and travel, or the comfort and support came from the light surrounding them.

I've seen that different people have different needs at different points in their life. Some have felt their way of life was in jeopardy, other feeling a bit of anxiety. Some people feel pretty good, and like they don't need much in the way of help right now. No matter what, however, they have become happier, grown, or in some other way benefited as their faith in their Lord Jesus Christ has been strengthened. Every one. And I know that no matter what are needs or concerns maybe, the Savior and His teachings, the Gospel, will help us!

That's awesome! And John was baptized! It was a super good service, and he was confirmed yesterday! He's doing pretty well, but he's still working on getting a job, so prayers for him for a little bit would be good, if possible!

Things are good, but today was busy! I probably won't get a mass email out, unfortunately, but I'll catch up again!

AUGUST 7, 2018 - WEEK #23 Opportunities!

OPPORTUNITIES!

Ni Hao, WoDe JiaTing!

I'm sure I butchered that Pinyin and Chinese Grammar. I'm a little bit out of practice. Or rather, I never practiced, sooooo...

So there Elder Ford and I are, last Monday Morning, and we wake up to find a text on our phone from the Sister in our ward who signed up to feed us dinner on Wednesday. She tells us that she has 2 girls from China staying with her, and that she wanted us to teach them before they flew home on Friday. We were SO STOKED!!! But what were the chances? That I would be in Yucaipa, and that I would still have those memories of living in China a few years ago fresh in my mind to be able to talk with them about it. 

At first we talked a lot about the differences in our cultures, and then we started talking about our individual beliefs. We talked a lot about who God is, and how He loves us, and so He teaches us how to be better people. Our Ward Mission Leader happened to have two Chinese copies of the Book of Mormon, and we gave those to them. Apparently, Lily, one of the girls, was reading it constantly after we left. She said something along the lines of, "I don't quite understand everything this Book says, but I like the feeling I get when I read it!" 

Would someone else have been able to talk to and relate to them? Probably. But God placed Elder Ford and I in this area for this opportunity to prepare them for when Proselyting missionaries can find them in China. 

When we are doing what we can to invite the Spirit into our lives, and doing what we are supposed to do, there will always be something that God wants us to do. Whether it be something that we need to learn, or someone that we need to help. We just need to be ready for that opportunity. 

After dinner, we went to read in the Book of Mormon with John, who is going to be baptized on August 25th! As we sat down to read with him, we saw a girl sitting nearby. We invited her to come and read with us, and she accepted. When she came and sat down, though, John just started telling all about us, and how if she had questions, she could ask them right away and that we would do our best to answer. He is so awesome!

Madison, that girl, had an awesome experience reading in the Book of Mormon! She said that she really wanted to meet with us again, and so that next morning we did! And after that lesson, she asked if we could have a Bible and/or Book of Mormon Study with her throughout the school year! 

That morning, we had our Zone Conference all about our studies! We really learned a lot about how to study for the people we are teaching and working with, rather than just study for ourselves. 

I was feeling pretty bleh that morning, but after the testimonies and the Spirit I felt in that Zone Conference, I was ready for both that dinner and that lesson! Otherwise, I may not have been ready for the opportunities that my Heavenly Father was presenting us with!

Always remember that God is mindful of you, what you've been through, and is giving you the opportunities to see miracles because of those things! When we remember that, it becomes easier to reach out to our Heavenly Father, which means that He can open the gates of heaven to drench us in every blessing and tender mercy!

That's a lot of random things tossed together, but that was this week (Last week. Sorry, I'll explain the lateness in the next one). It's all good stuff, and, ultimately, I've just been learning about how much my Heavenly Father, how much God Himself, cares about each and every one of us. And I'm doing my best to show and communicate that I love Him too!

JULY 31, 2018 - WEEK #22

YUCAIPA AGAIN!

Ok, so this week? Super Sweet. First off, transfers on Wednesday! And, Drum Roll Please!

Ok. Well... That didn't work. And there are no changes. I'm still in Yucaipa! Hooray! Yucaipa is fun! Elder Ford is still here, too. He's really excited about that, understandably. This does mean that he will be spending 25% of his mission in this Ward, which is pretty sweet! 

The other cool thing that happened in Transfers is that Sister Bastian, who was in my MTC District, is now in my district here in Yucaipa! I'm super excited for that!

Also, a super cool miracle happened this week! The 4th Ward Sisters had organized for a bunch of people from their ward to help this woman they were teaching move some stuff. However, all of those people had things come up, and they were beginning to scramble to find people! They talked to us, and we headed straight over to go help. But, according to missionary rules, Elders cannot be alone with women in a private setting (just to keep every one safe), and so we called Jacob, one of our members, to come and be the Male Present, because we knew that he'd be available. He can, and we helped this woman real quick. Now, while we were helping her, Jacob started talking to this woman's daughter, and they hit it right off! Apparently, the daughter was having some struggles of her own, and Jacob just told her about some of his experience, and then gave her his number in case she needed someone to talk to! It was super cool to see, because had all of those people not cancelled, we never would've been able to go and bring Jacob! 

A big testimony builder for me this week was focused on the Priesthood! We had a lesson with Marcus on Saturday, and we got to talk about the Priesthood, and how it is the Power and Authority to act in God's name. And how that same authority that Jesus gave to his Apostles has been restored on the Earth today! 

I got to see that in action a lot this week. I was feeling weird towards the beginning of the week, and my fellow Elders were able help me by giving a Priesthood Blessing. Wendy and her roommate, Sister Fawn had been having some trials recently, and we were able to give them Priesthood blessings on Sunday. And finally, we were able to help Jacob by giving him a blessing. I know that as I was receiving that blessing, I was feeling that help from my Loving Heavenly Father. And as I was giving one of those blessings, I was being given the words to say by the Spirit! And that Power is present on the earth! It's what allows our families to be together beyond this life, and into Eternity! 

I know that God lives and loves us! Thank you all for your support in my efforts to serve my Savior!

P.S. By the way, someone asked me a question in an email, and I've been using some of my studies to try and put together an answer. It's been really fun! And so, if you have any questions, about Why we should study the Scriptures or why we need a Prophet today, I can try to study and get an answer for you, or at very least point you towards something to help you! QUESTION/NOTE FROM MOM:

That hamburger is quite a one of a kind!  Wow!  Did you have to squish it down to get it in your mouth?

It has rained this afternoon --  which I LOVE!

Daniel is working to plan a group date and we just have 3 weeks until school starts.

Yuxing goes back to China in 2 weeks, Bethany leaves for BYU in 3 weeks and Alex leaves on his mission in 4 weeks.

Things will change around here.

BEN'S REPLY:

Actually, the best way we found was to take off the top bun, and eat it with a fork until you get to the point where you can stick the bun back on and eat it normally. But we were so full afterwards!

I miss the rain! We've gotten it to sprinkle a little bit a few times, but it has been pathetically sad.
