ELDER RICHARDSON LETTER #30 -- DEC 15, 2013
I'm
really scared that I got off on numbering my letters, because usually I just
look in my inbox for the highest number that I see, and write the next highest.
But if I got off near the beginning, it will never get fixed. I really just
want to hit exactly #105.

Last
Monday, we went to the giant mall in our area. It's basically 4 or 5 giant 6 or
more story buildings that have tons of shops and things. Unfortunately, most of
the shops are expensive clothes stores, but luckily there are a few bookstores
or game stores that even it out. We went to a Japanese 39元 store and I bought
some new ties! They're pretty good for being so cheap! (Picture attached) It's
probably equivalent to a dollar store in America (39元 is about $1.20). I
think we're going to have to go back sometime and buy some more.
Tuesday
we had Zone Conference in Shilin, and then I went to JiLong with Elder
Montierth on exchanges. It was my third exchange with him so far and we had a
lot of fun together even though ALL of our appointments got canceled. We talked
a lot about having pure desires and following our logic and intuition while
relying on the Lord.
Quote
from Elder Montierth during our exchange evaluation. He said it, and then we
both realized that it was really profound: "Gratitude is the antidote for
pride."

Thursday
we went to visit our super rich investigator. We've been trying to get him to
come to church, but he didn't this week because he's going to France to buy a
Picasso. I'm not joking; this guy is loaded. We figured out that his
international trading company deals a lot in oil, so that explains it a little
bit.
On
Saturday day we spent all day at "temple square." At 8:30, we had a
member of the seventy who came and talked to all the missionaries. I really
liked his talk and I took a lot of notes. He said while he was mission
president his dad (Pres. Boyd K. Packer) would often call him to see how he was
doing. Elder Packer said his poor assistants would often pick up the phone to
hear that voice, and then, shaking, bring the phone to him.

It
was also funny because about halfway through he asked if opening the chapel
doors would help the humidity in the room. Half the missionaries thought,
"No it definitely won't" and the other half thought "It's humid
in here?". I guess I've gotten really used to the humidity here. It'll be
a problem going back to dry Utah!
Saturday
evening the English ward here put on their yearly Nativity performance. This
thing is intense. I think their bishop used to be in show business, and they
somehow had connections to get top-notch lighting and sound systems. They even
had a live horse bring Mary in to the cultural hall. Actually, the original
plan was to have the performances outside in the courtyard between the temple
and the chapel, but after doing the entire first performance out in the rain,
they moved the other two indoors. They had built two sets so that they could do
it either way. It was pretty amazing. They had the missionary choir sit in the
crowd, and then we stood up to sing the last two numbers with the member choir.
Anyway,
it was an exciting week! Enjoy the snow, for those of you who have it!
Add
oil!

Richardson
