LETTER #59: ELDER HYRUM RICHARDSON
JULY 7, 2014
This week was exhausting.
I spent Tuesday to Friday in Hualian, which is on the East Coast of Taiwan. We started traveling early tuesday morning, and then spent Tuesday afternoon, all day Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday morning just on the streets, trying to find people for the Missionaries there to teach. It was really tiring and it was REALLY HOT. It's hotter in Hualian than it is in Taibei. Someone told me that the record was 105 degrees Fahrenheit and then there's 90% humidity as well. I'm pretty sure I sweat a gallon or two every day. It was really THAT hot. Thankfully, the air conditioning in the apartment worked, so we could at least cool down every night.
I got sunburned for the first time in Taiwan. I've just never worn sunscreen here, but I figured out that all of the pollution in Taibei filters out the UV rays for us. And then I went to Hualian where there isn't pollution and got sunburned!
My companion in Hualian was Elder Zheng who is from Taizhong. I've got a picture of him. He was really fun to be companions with. Another cool part is that he used to serve in that area, and we coincidentally ran into members twice on the street, and so we got fed by members twice! One of the meals was a 21oz steak which was WAY too big. I couldn't eat it all.
That family that we started teaching last week came to church this week! They didn't come in time for Sacrament meeting, and the dad didn't stay for the whole time, but Sister Cai really enjoyed Relief Society. We had a member who jumped in and took care of her and helped her feel comfortable there, which we were really grateful for!
Brother Wang is really looking forward to his baptism next Saturday. We could have tried to move it up a week, but we just decided to be patient and let him get baptized on the day that we originally planned with him. That'll be a good day. :)
Last night, we went to a fireside that was in the chapel next to the temple, and there I saw one of my investigators from Zhonghe. I was super excited to hear that she will be getting baptized in three weeks! She was really close when I was there, but I left suddenly and hadn't heard anything for a while. I'm thrilled that she is getting baptized!
Last night, we went to eat at Bishop's house before we went to the fireside. They decided to cook us more Western food, so we had hot dogs, ribs, and mashed potatoes. I don't think I've had mashed potatoes in almost a year, so it was really good.
Well, this week should be a good one! Also, next week is temple day so I won't email until Wednesday.
Add oil!
