ELDER HYRUM RICHARDSON #64
AUGUST 11, 2014
We had a really great week!
This area is a lot more about finding. We probably spend most of the day finding, but finding is also a lot slower because we only talk to foreigners. So we spend a lot of time walking. Elder Wilson can't ride a bike, so all we do is walk and ride the subway. Elder Dwiggins gifted me a pedometer, so I used it all day on Saturday and I walked 12,141 steps! I'm going to use it this whole week and see how far I walk.
This week was Father's Day in Taiwan. The word for 8 and the word for father sound similar, so when you say today is August 8th, it sounds just like saying father (baba), so that's why August 8th is Father's Day!
We met a lot of cool people this week. A lot of the people we talk to are just tourists who are passing through, but it's cool to get a chance to talk to them! We met people from Ghana, US, UK, France, Canada, Korea, Germany, Holland, and a few other places this week.
We have two investigators now. Carlos is still doing great. We are trying to emphasize reading the Book of Mormon so that he can know if it's true. We also starting meeting with Samantha this week. She is Taiwanese, but wants to attend the English Ward, so we have to wait until our Bishop gets back to see what will happen. She's the Chinese teacher for some of the YSAs in the ward. She really wants to get baptized. We set a date with her for mid-September, so hopefully it'll all work out!
On Sunday, many of our members were back in church. The attendance in Sacrament meeting at least tripled this week, because everybody was coming back from vacation for school to start next week. Some families are new, and just like you guys are trying to adjust to living in a foreign country. We met a lot of people on Sunday, and hopefully we'll remember all of the names!
Elder Wilson and I have been teaching Gospel Principles class in Sunday school for the past two weeks because there isn't a regular teacher that's been called yet. It was difficult on Sunday because the topic was baptism, and I kept thinking what I wanted to say in Chinese and then translating it to English. It made speaking English difficult.
This week, we found a Krispy Kreme store. We went in and the lady behind the counter gave us free donuts, so we got two for the price of one. She probably just thought Elder Wilson was really handsome.
I like street names in Taiwan. We live on the "sound of rain" street. (雨聲街 yu3 sheng1 jie1)
That's all. Add oil!
