ELDER HYRUM RICHARDSON
LETTER #63: AUGUST 4, 2014
Well it was a very full week, as transfer weeks usually are.
Last Monday evening, Sister Trouble took us out for dinner at a place called "Shark bites Toast." I thought it was a really interesting name.
On Tuesday, we ran into one of our friends around the chapel area. She is a lady from Thailand. She is Christian, and loves the Bible. A month or two ago we gave her a Book of Mormon in Thai, and she liked it so much that she sent it to her father in Thailand! We can't teach her because she can't come to church because of work, but we'll find another Book of Mormon in Thai to give to her, and she wants us to send one to her uncle in Thailand!
For our English Party on Wednesday, we played family feud with our English classes. They thought it was pretty fun. Then, at the end, I played saxophone while Elder Darger played guitar to perform for all of the English students.
On Thursday, we met with our awesome investigator Sister Ye. She is doing really great. Elder Darger and I said that it was probably the ideal lesson, because it was really relaxed and laughed a lot with the YSA members that were there with us, and it was also spiritual and she really understood what we talked about. Hopefully she'll get baptized in September!
I saw Elder Okeson on Friday! He looked like he was doing good! He moved down to Miaoli, which is pretty far down the west coast. He's got a good trainer!
On Friday, I moved! Now I am serving in the Taibei English Ward! And I'm back with Elder Wilson who was my companion back when I first got to Songshan in the tri-panionship. So now missionary work is a little bit different! When we contact on the street, we only talk to anyone who is not Taiwanese. So we meet a lot of people from many different places.
We have one investigator here, his name is Carlos. He's originally from Mexico, but his wife is from Germany, and he has a baby who is 6 months old. He's a very devout Christian, and he's been coming to our church for a little while. He is very open-minded and very determined to read from the Book of Mormon to find out if it is true. We had a really great and spiritual lesson with him on Friday, and we are trying to help him gain a testimony and get connected with missionaries in Germany when he moves back there in three weeks.
It's very different teaching in English. Elder Wilson kept laughing at me because I would throw in Chinese phrases or "filler words" during that first lesson, but I also like not having the language barrier that is usually there.
Saturday we went to visit a Less Active family who owns a Brazilian Pizzeria. We go often to do service and to eat pizza. They are super nice and we are trying to encourage them to go to church even though they open their store on Sunday!
Our ward here is a cool mixture of cultures. We have people from the USA, UK, Brazil, Philippines, Chile, Mexico, and other places too. It's a great ward. It's probably similar to Suzhou right now, where a lot of people are gone for the summer, but they'll be coming back in the next few weeks. It was really weird to have church meetings in English again.
Hopefully my Chinese won't get too much worse while I'm speaking English!
That's all for this week. Add oil!
Elder Richardson
